„Keine Prämie erhalten“

Der ehemalige HCB-Spieler Austin Smith beendet seine Karriere als Eishockeyprofi und erhebt schwere Vorwürfe gegen seinen ehemaligen Verein und Sportdirektor Dieter Knoll.

Austin Smith beendet seine Karriere. Der ehemalige HCB-Profi erklärt in einem ausführlichen Instagram-Post, dass er wegen der Folgen einer schweren Gehirnerschütterung mit dem Eishockeyspielen aufhören muss.

Den letzten Teil der Regular Season und die Play-Offs habe er trotz einer schweren Gehirnerschütterung gespielt, schreibt Austin Smith. „Die Team-Verantwortlichen haben versucht mich davon zu überzeugen, dass es mir gut geht und mir Tabletten gegen die Schmerzen gegeben“, schreibt Smith.

„In den Play-Offs habe ich dann aber zwei Spiele verpasst, weil die Schmerzen so stark waren“, erklärt Austin Smith.

Dieter Knoll sei danach außer sich gewesen und habe erklärt, dass eine Gehirnerschütterung kein Grund sei, ein Spiel auszulassen. „Er hat sich danach auch geweigert, mir die Play-Off-Prämie auszuzahlen“, so der ehemalige HCB-Spieler.

In seinem Post rät er aber auch neuen Spielern sich gut zu überlegen, welchen Verein sie wählen: „Ich hoffe, dass so etwas wie mir keinem anderen Spieler passiert“, so Austin Smith.

Der HCB Südtirol wollte sich vorerst nicht zu den Vorwürfen äußern, kündigte jedoch eine Stellungnahme in Laufe des Nachmittags an.

Hier das Statement des ehemaligen HCB-Spielers: 

„I have officially decided to retire from the greatest game I’ve ever played. I will miss it every day, but I’m grateful for everything it has given me in my life. I would like to thank all of my coaches, teammates, and fans I had the pleasure playing with, or for, along the way. I would always like to thank my parents and my wife for all of their sacrifices and endless support of me, allowing me to live out my dream.

The last season was the perfect way to end my career. Unfortunately it came at a cost. I played the last part of the regular season and playoffs with a pretty severe concussion. I tried to convince myself I was healthy enough to play and that their wouldn’t be consequences. The team doctors and owner didn’t empathize with my symptoms and what I was going through. They forced pills on me and told me it would be ok. I even missed two games in the playoffs, because symptoms were so severe. The Gm, Dieter Knoll of @hcbfoxes, was furious and did not understand why I could not play. He actually refused to pay me the extra bonuses the team earned in the playoffs, because he felt that a concussion is not a reason to miss a game. The @erstebankeishockeyliga has been trying to convince the Gm to do what is right and pay me what I earned. Regardless of the money, the symptoms are still lingering, and treatment is very expensive. The Gm has not offered any help financially for the medical bills, and has dodged every phone call and email of mine.

I will always cherish my time in Bolzano and I thank my teammates, coaches, and fans for helping me battle through until the end. I just hope that someday these symptoms will go away, and I really hope this circumstance never happens to anyone else.
